How To Find A Good Roofer

Tips On How To Find a Good Roofer

lWhen you’re hiring a roofer, it can be hard to tell the good from the bad. Roofing work can be a real investment in your property, whether you’re having repairs or having a new roof. If your roof is damaged or leaking, then your property and its contents can be at risk. If the problem is very bad, it could even lead to structural damage to your whole property, right down to the foundations in extreme cases. So finding a good roofer is something that should not be rushed – it’s worth spending a little extra time to ensure that you get a professional roofer for your property.

Firstly while it may be tempting to go for the cheapest roofer, you may regret making money your first priority when you come to getting your roof fixed. It’s always worth getting quotations from different roofers to find out who’s most competitive, but what you really want to know is how much experience your roofer has, and whether they’re fully trained and insured to work on your property.

The best way to find a roofer is by word of mouth. If one of your neighbours has had roofing work carried out and they’re happy with the work then that’s a good place to start. Even if you don’t need a roofer right there and then, take down a number for the future. When you’re contracting a roofer, try to get as many references as you can. Ask around your local area to see if they’ve carried out work for other people, or ask the roofer to refer you to satisfied clients. A good roofer should have no problem with pointing you in the direction of previous customers who can provide you with a glowing reference. If they’re unwilling or slow to do this, then it could be a sign that there’s something wrong.

Check the Facts

Once you’ve found a roofer that looks promising, make sure you check their credentials. A good roofer should be a member of a professional trade body – but don’t just take their word for it, double-check the details yourself. Membership of a trade body will usually ensure a certain standard of work from the roofer to comply with membership rules.

Find out how long your roofing firm has been in business and how well-established they are. A reputable roofing company should have a business address, a phone number, a business license and tax identification number. If your roofer doesn’t have all these things, you should probably steer clear.

Put Paperwork in Place

To cover your back, make sure that you get your estimate in writing, otherwise your bill could go through the roof – so to speak – as the work continues, leaving you with a bill that’s way above your original budget. It’s only reasonable that the figure could change a little but if there’s a substantial difference then at least you’ll be able to take action if you can show in writing that the bill has spiralled out of control.

Make sure that the roofer is fully insured, otherwise you could end up being liable if something were to go wrong. Roofing work, or working at height, is a risky business so your roofer should have insurance to cover any accidents. Ensure that your roofer is up-to-date with current health and safety practices too – ask for proof if you’re not sure.

Before you let your roofer start any work, make sure that you and they know exactly what work is involved. Get details in writing so that you know what to expect from your roofer. Most roofers will be more than happy to make you feel at ease with them before they start work, and will go out of their way to prove their credentials.

When you’re happy with everything, get a proposal that details when the work is due to start and when it should be completed so that you don’t end up with roofing work that continues for weeks rather than days.
