How To Protect Your Home Before The Storms Hit

How to Prevent Wind Damage to Roofs

Back in 2005, Birmingham suffered the worst tornado seen in the UK for 30 years. The bill for the damage these winds caused came in at around £40m. With the British winters seeing ever more extreme weather conditions, such as gale force winds, your roof is working harder than ever to protect your property from the elements.

Your rooftop takes the brunt of stormy weather and if your roof isn’t well maintained throughout the year, roof damage can become more severe and lead to bigger problems when the wind picks up.

Although your roof is designed to withstand high winds and extreme weathers, it is susceptible to damage through constant battering from strong winds. The edges of your roof, in particular, can succumb to damage as this the wind can really take its toll on these vulnerable areas. The centre of your roof generally suffers less stress from wind pressure.

There are two types of strain that your rooftop suffers from the wind – negative pressure, which is when the wind creates a suction that can damage tiles, and positive pressure, when the wind can push against the slates.

This push-pull motion can cause real damage to your roof. The wind can push your tiles up and allow water to leak through to the inside of your property but even worse than that, it can affect other neighbouring tiles. As soon as the tiles on your roof start to shift, the underside of your roofing is exposed and you could be facing extensive damage. If you have any missing roof tiles or damaged tiles, this is when the wind can really wreak havoc.

To help protect your roof from strong winds, maintain your roof all year round. Keep an eye on areas where damage can often occur, such as around the flashings and chimney brickwork. Check for leaks, inside and out – signs of wear and tear can include rotting timber in your loft, or rusting metal work. Look for light coming through the roof as this could be a sign of gaps in your roofing. Look for shingles that have fallen from the roof, or moss – which can damage your rooftop if left to grow.

If you have any concerns, contact a professional roofer. You can have a roof report or survey carried out that will allay any concerns you have, and advise you if there’s any roof repair work required.

Preventing damage is the best defence for your roof against the wind. Good annual maintenance of your roof will keep it in good order and ensure that it’s doing its job in keeping your property safe.
