When To Call An Emergency Roofer

When to call an Emergency Roofer

Emergency roofing is the last resort when your property has suffered damage that threatens the integrity of your roof and ultimately your home.

The most reason for emergency roof repairs is when your roof has been damaged by extreme weather. Strong storms and hurricane level winds take their toll on your rooftop and chimney, which is the highest point of your property and tends to take the brunt of stormy weather.

If your roof has suffered severe damage and is letting rainwater through that threatens serious damage to the inside of your property, then it’s likely that you’re going to need the services of a reliable emergency roofer. When water is pouring into your property from the roof, it’s essential that you act quickly to prevent real damage from occurring inside your home or even worse to stop water from causing problems with the structure of your property.

If you can make some temporary repairs to patch up your roof to stem the water, then this could really help you limit the damage. Protect the interior of your property with plastic sheeting to cover your precious possessions and use buckets to collect the water.

If the ceiling is in danger of bursting under the weight of the water, there’s not a lot you can do to prevent it – in fact, it’s best to help it on its way. Poke through the ceiling with something like the end of a mop to create a small hole – being careful if you’re standing underneath. This will allow the water to flow through and you’ll be able to control the amount of damage that’s done.

If you’re concerned that water could come into contact with any electrical equipment, switch it off at the mains if it’s safe to do so and call out a qualified electrician immediately.

Quick Fixes

If you’re competent at DIY, you may want to assess the damage to your roof before you call an emergency roofer. If you’re confident with working at height, you may be able to carry out some simple repairs yourself. Usually this is best done by a trained professional because the storm may have made your roof even more unsafe to carry your weight.

Firstly, be aware of safety procedures for working on your roof. You can’t do anything while it’s wet outside because you’ll lose your balance. Strong winds or even lightening could also prove fatal, so you’ll have to wait until your roof’s dry before you attempt to climb up there. As soon as it’s safe to work on your roof, clear any standing water and clear away any debris.

If you have missing tiles or shingles that have curled, you can fix the problem with roofing cement. Curled shingles can be lightly heated so that you can mould them back into place. Use a flame spreader, but be careful not to heat too much or you’ll end up damaging it irreparably. When you’re bent the shingles back in to shape, apply roof cement to the underside and press firmly back in to place.

You can cover holes using roof cement, or for larger holes, use plywood. Apply the wood and nail in to place to cover up the gap in your roof. Nail it down firmly, with gaps of no more than eight inches, to ensure that the plywood’s secure. For larger holes, you could try using plastic material such as tarp, securing it with a strips of lath nailed down for security.

These are simple ways to deal with emergency roof damage, but it’s best to call out a professional contractor as soon as possible to ensure the safety of your property and its contents.

It’s a good idea to have the number of an emergency roofer on hand, in case your property is hit by storm damage.
